You can make safe, affirming schools a reality
for LGBTQ+ students across the state.
The Out Accountability Project started as an idea more than a year ago.
Over this time, many LGBTQ+ organizations and advocates generously contributed their time, expertise, and skills to planning and shaping our goal to be the place where parents, caregivers, allies and educators gather in support of LGBTQ+ students. The most sophisticated piece of the plan is the School Accountability Index – a system that grades schools on their learning environments. This work requires significant investments in research, development of a thorough and just method for scoring schools, and website development.
Simultaneously, there is a lot of policy work at the state level on safe school climates. During the 2024 session, we had two wins – SB 380, which modified the mandated school climate assessment surveys performed by districts, and SB 327, the Hate Speech Task Force. Work for the 2025 session is underway and will focus on inclusive curriculum and equity in school libraries, and the Project has secured support from Equality CT, state library associations, LGBTQ+ educator affinity groups, and GLSEN, with more to come.
